Women Gather & Keep it Real at Christian Unity

By Kelly Harris DeBerry

The 2nd Saturday of each month women gather in a circle at Christian Unity Baptist Church to uplift each other and have straight-talk discussions—rarely voiced in church. It’s not your typical women’s church group. Keeping it real with God and each other is encouraged. It’s what makes the Coffee for the Soul attractive to members like me and even to non-church goers.  Now, I won’t tell you the details of the circle’s realness, but I can almost guarantee you’ve never heard discussions like Coffee for the Soul at your church. And no, it’s not reality TV-style foolishness. You can express your feelings honestly without fear of being struck by lightning.

Although no church is perfect, Christian Unity is unique and has a long history of supporting women’s programs and leadership. It has many women associate ministers on its roster.

Audrey Jackson Johnson served as Assistant Pastor until Hurricane Katrina. She lives in Houston now, but is still beloved by the congregation.

The pulpit Rev. Dwight Webster preaches behind was made by hand by artisan and member Carol Lewis.  Rev. Dr. Kimberly Chandler, Xavier University Communications professor, works with CUBC’s first lady, Trudell Webster to coordinate creative activities for participants. Other members and community leaders have led circles too.  Currently the group is reading, A Course in Weight Loss: 21 Spiritual Lessons for Surrendering Your Weight Forever by Marianne Williamson.

The next book could be, Iyanla Vanzant’s new book, Forgiveness.

I attended the last session of 2013. Each woman wrote a thank you note, placed it in a basket that was passed around until each woman picked a random note written by another sister in the circle.

My note said:

“Keep the faith. You are so loved.

Thank you for being a woman

Of God. Thank you for your beautiful

Smile. Thank you for lifting the spirit

of your sisters. You are truly loved.”

I don’t know who wrote it, but I felt encouraged when I read the card.
